GOOGLE is a very powerful search engine.  There are literally hundreds of commands at your disposal that can be used to effectively search the internet.  The subject of these advanced “operators” is the subject of many books.  However, there are certain basic operators that are easy to learn and will be most useful in your daily searches.  Since I don’t believe in reinventing the wheel, the excellent guide compiled by Nancy Blachman is set forth below, with my own additional notes following:

OTHER USEFUL FEATURES:

Time anywhere in the world: Type e.g. ”time San Francisco” or “time Sao Palo”

Spelling aid: Type in a word; if it’s not correct, Google will suggest a spelling.

Definition: type “define” then the phrase or word

Area Code Lookup:  Type, e.g. “415” and Google will let you know where it is, show you a map, too.

Search for specific file types: Type, e.g. “U.S. submarines filetype:ppd” for only powerpoint presentations for U.S submarines

Site operator to limit searches to a particular site: e.g. type “george clooney site:nytimes.com”.  Further limited by the “OR” operator, this can be quite defining: e.g. “u.s. submarines or u.s. warships site:nytimes.com”

CalculatorAs noted above, it’s lots easier to simply type “123 * [886/9 + 2]” than to enter it in a calculator app

A units-of-measurement and currency converter:a units-of-measurement and currency converter:. Type “teaspoons in 1.3 gallons,” for example, or “euros in 17 dollars.” Click Search to see the answer.

The  ‘. .  ‘ operator: Use it like this:  “superbowls 1998 . . 2005” for information about the superbowls for those years

And, of course, the exclusionary operator: e.g. “sports broadcasters” -howard cosell”  to search for famous sports commentators, but not Howard Cosell, whose name might dominate the sites.
